Lavender Hill Mob - Alec Guinness and Stanley Holloway, and... a very brief appearance, less than a minute, at the very beginning, of an up-and-coming actress: Audrey Hepburn! Three years later she had her first starring role in Roman Holiday and won an oscar for it. Lavender Hill Mob won an oscar for screenplay and Alec Guinness had a nomination for best actor. I've been putting a lot of my very favorite movies into this thread, but Lavender Hill Mob is my "desert island DVD"!

Alec Guinness, in his autobiography Blessings in Disguise, recounts that when filming the movie, one of the scenes involved taking the stairs from the top of the Eiffel Tower. He was directed to a stairway and had gone just a few steps when he saw that the steps just ran out. Almost the end of his life and movie career - and nobody said "sorry"!

maikkij, as you might see from her current avatar, looked very much like Audrey Hepburn in her youth, something she really didn't try to play down. I'm still trying to figure out how a computer geek ended up with a dancing girl! (Not that I'm complaining, mind you)

@Sugah: I love, love, love "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?" The classics are so good, focusing on true acting and writing talents and not special effects to get them by. Don't get me wrong, there are wonderful movies out there today, it just seems they are so few and far between.

I agree with Sugah and Elle about the importance of good acting and good writing. (Good screenwriting is rare these days.) We just rented Magic in the Moonlight written and directed by Woody Allen and starring Colin Firth, Eileen Atkins, and Emma Stone. Good date flick, more like a drawing room comedy written by Oscar Wilde. No special effects, no torrid love scenes, and no burning gasoline. Good writing, witty lines, and very enjoyable.
